Veterans' Dependent Educational Benefits

Image

At the Maine Bureau of Veterans' Services, our commitment to supporting our veterans and their families is unwavering. This month, we would like to highlight an essential program that is dedicated to empowering the dependents of our veterans—the Veterans' Dependents Educational Benefits (VDEB).

We understand that education is a cornerstone of personal growth and success. Through this program, we aim to provide opportunities for the dependents of veterans to pursue their educational dreams and unlock their full potential.

About the program:

VDEB is designed to assist the children and spouses of veterans in obtaining a quality education.

Maine provides a waiver of tuition and all mandatory fees for spouses and dependents of veterans as defined in Title 37B, Chapter 7, Section 505(2).

Specifically, veterans must meet the following criteria:

  • Has a 100% total permanent disability rating resulting from service-connected disability. Or who
  • Was killed in action;
  • Died from a service-connected disability as a result of service;
  • At the time of death was totally and permanently disabled due to a service-connected disability, but whose death was not related to the service-connected disability; or
  • Is a member of the Armed Forces on active duty who has been listed for more than 90 days as missing in action, captured or forcibly detained or interned in the line of duty by a foreign government or power.
Schools covered under this program include:
  • University of Maine System
  • Maine Community Colleges
  • Maine Maritime Academy

Please view our brochure for more information.

100% Disabled Veterans Camping Opportunity at Maine State Parks

Image

Qualified veterans can get a campsite one of two ways, either first-come-first-serve or by booking a site in advance. In order to get a first-come-first-serve campsite, veterans must arrive in person at the campground with either their letter from the BMV (detailed on how to get below) or by arriving in their vehicle which has Maine 100% DAV plates. Since these campsites are on first-come-first-serve basis, a reservation is strongly suggested.

In order to reserve a campsite using this benefit, the veteran must request and receive a camping letter from the BMV’s registration unit by calling (207) 624-9000 x 52149.

Once the letter has been received by the veteran from the BMV, they must provide the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands with a copy by either emailing it to campground.reservations@maine.gov, mailing a copy to: 22 State House Station, Augusta, ME 04333-0022, or faxing it to (207) 287-6170. If a person has difficulty providing us with the letter, the BMV is willing to assist with that process by sending a copy directly.
